Popstrukt x Kassa | Design In Conversation

Introducing the Popstrukt x Kassa Studio Slim Cabinet — a first-of-its-kind collaboration between two studios who believe good design should last a lifetime.

Some products start with a problem. This one started with a bird bath.

When Adriaan Louw, founder of Popstrukt, first came across Kassa Studio's work, it was a set of beautifully crafted bird baths that stopped him in his tracks. More specifically, it was the way they moved between art and function without apologising for either. "We were drawn to the way they seamlessly blended art and function," he explains. That instinct led to a phone call, and a phone call led to the Popstrukt x Kassa Studio Slim Cabinet.

"We want it to be an heirloom piece. It can follow you throughout different stages of your life and be passed down through generations."
— Adriaan Louw, Popstrukt

THE STUDIO BEHIND THE COLLAB

Meet Kassa Studio

Kassa Studio is the practice of two sisters, Korine Krüger and Sanet Fau Stegmann, whose backgrounds span architecture, interior architecture and design, with experience built across South Africa and France. Founded in 2017, the studio approaches every project with a shared conviction: that design should have purpose, stir passion and bring hope.

Their work is shaped by a slow, deliberate process. They value handcrafted making, embrace the subtle irregularities that give each piece its individuality, and design objects that are genuinely meant to be lived with. For Kassa Studio, the measure of a good object is simple: does it invite reflection? Does it bring a sense of wonder to the everyday?

THE BRIEF

Filling the gaps, literally.

Every home has one: that awkward narrow stretch beside the fridge, or the slim corridor corner that just sits there doing nothing. Popstrukt wanted to respond to it, not with a filler, but with something worth noticing.

The brief was clear. A narrow, space-conscious piece that could hold its own as a functional object and a visual one. Kassa Studio's architectural sensibility was perfectly suited to the challenge. Drawing inspiration from the in-betweenness of urban spaces, the vertical rhythms of city skylines and the layered facades of buildings, they gave the cabinet its signature silhouette. Tall. Considered. Quietly striking.

THE OBJECT

Introducing The Slim Cabinet

The name says everything. 'Slim' is a bilingual pun: in English it means narrow, and in Afrikaans it means clever. The cabinet is both. Crafted in powder-coated steel its textured, perforated surface integrates ergonomic handles without sacrificing the visual. Inside it makes room for the everyday: wine, books, kitchen overflow, or whatever your particular gap demands. The Cabinet is available in two stunning colourways; Rooibos and Rose; & Sand and Sunset.

The result is a piece that functions as a utility cupboard, a bookshelf, a wine rack or simply an object to adore. This is a cabinet that belongs in the world. It made its debut in House & Leisure Volume 21 (Roam), a fitting first look for a piece born from this kind of considered exchange.

"It's practical, it's beautiful, it's functional, it's versatile and it fills the little gaps in your space in a very slim way."
— Adriaan Louw, Popstrukt

WHY GOOD DESIGN MATTERS

Created for the long-term

Popstrukt has always built for longevity: flatpack design that travels with you, furniture that adapts to different spaces and different stages of life. The Slim Cabinet takes that philosophy and layers something more onto it. The idea that a truly well-designed piece is not just durable in material, but durable in meaning. Something you hold onto. Something you hand down.

That is what happens when collaboration is treated not as a merging of styles, but as an ongoing conversation between makers, between disciplines, and ultimately between the object and the spaces it inhabits.
